Hello and welcome! Today, I’d like to introduce Kakuidake Walkers Park, a free, no-reservation-required campsite located in Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture.
This hidden gem is easily accessible and makes an ideal stopover for sightseeing around Sasebo or touring the western part of Kyushu. It’s especially recommended as a base camp for motorbike trips to Cape Kanzaki — the westernmost point of mainland Japan — as well as Hirado Island and Ikitsuki Island.
What is Kakuidake Walkers Park?
Kakuidake Walkers Park is a campground located in a nature park in the outskirts of Sasebo. Nestled in the mountains, it offers a peaceful retreat surrounded by greenery while still being conveniently close to the city.
When I visited on a weekday, there wasn’t a single other camper — I truly had the whole place to myself. Enjoying complete solitude in such a serene environment was the perfect way to unwind and recharge.

Why This Campground is Worth Visiting
I stayed here during a motorbike tour covering Sasebo, Hirado, and Ikitsuki, and it was an excellent location to base myself. The campsite provides easy access to Cape Kanzaki, Hirado Island, and the breathtaking Sunset Way coastal road on Ikitsuki Island.
But the best part? It’s free and doesn’t require any reservation — just show up and set up camp.
While I was there, a kind local couple walking through the park in the morning struck up a conversation and shared that many travelers from across Japan visit the park. Clearly, it’s a well-kept secret among camping enthusiasts.
- No reservation required, completely free to use
- About 30 minutes by car from Sasebo city center
- Perfect as a base for motorbike touring to Cape Kanzaki, Hirado, and Ikitsuki
- Peaceful and quiet, especially on weekdays — ideal for solo camping
- Surrounded by lush nature, great for relaxing and disconnecting
The site itself is long and narrow, facing the parking area. While not very spacious, it’s rarely crowded on weekdays.

Although you can’t drive your vehicle directly into the campsite, the parking lot is right next to it, making it easy to carry your gear.

On weekends and holidays, you’ll need to check in at the nearby Kakui no Mori Yuho-kan management center. However, on weekdays, no registration is required since the staff is off duty.

Streetlights come on at night, so if you prefer a darker, more secluded atmosphere, consider setting up your tent a bit farther from the main area.

Must-Visit Spots for Riders in the Area
Sasebo Port
A scenic harbor with moored Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force ships and naval vessels, offering a uniquely military maritime atmosphere. Not just for military buffs — this port town’s waterfront views are also a favorite among touring motorcyclists.

Cape Kanzaki Park (Kanzakibana)
This is the westernmost point of mainland Japan, marked by a commemorative monument and observation deck. It offers sweeping views of the East China Sea and is a symbolic, satisfying destination for touring riders — perfect for a memorable photo stop.

Ikitsuki Island — Sunset Way
A stunning coastal road that stretches along the west coast of Ikitsuki Island, known as Sunset Way. It’s a smooth, open route where you can ride with the sea just beside you — especially breathtaking at sunset. A favorite among riders and photographers alike.

Facilities Overview
The campground offers both a Western-style and a Japanese-style toilet, shared by all users. Since there is no staff present on weekdays, it’s a good idea to bring your own toilet paper, just in case.

The cooking area is equipped with a roof and lighting, making it safe and convenient to use even at night.

Important Notes for a Safe and Comfortable Stay

While Kakuida Walkers Park is a quiet campsite surrounded by nature, there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure a pleasant experience.
More Visitors on Weekends and Holidays
Although usually peaceful, the campground can become busier during weekends and long holidays, attracting local families and groups. If you’re looking for a tranquil solo camping experience, weekdays are your best bet.
Prepare Food and Essentials in Advance
There are no convenience stores or supermarkets nearby, so it’s best to do your shopping in downtown Sasebo before heading to the campsite. Be sure to stock up on food, drinks, and daily necessities such as toilet paper.
Narrow Roads — Drive with Caution
The road leading to Kakuida Walkers Park includes some narrow mountain paths. Extra caution is required when driving a car or riding a motorcycle, especially with many curves along the way. Aim to arrive before sunset for a safer journey.
