Highlights
- A Historic Shrine from Japanese Mythology
Izumo Taisha is one of Japan’s most important and ancient Shinto shrines, mentioned in both the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki. It enshrines Ōkuninushi no Ōkami, the deity of matchmaking and good relationships. - The Iconic Giant Shimenawa at Kaguraden
The massive sacred straw rope (shimenawa) hanging at the Kaguraden hall is a symbol of Izumo Taisha and a popular photo spot for visitors. - Watch the Sunset at Inasa Beach
Just 1.3 km from the shrine, Inasa Beach is a legendary site where deities from across Japan are said to gather. It’s also a spectacular location to watch the sunset — perfect for a relaxing break during your touring route.
Quick Impression
At the time, I was living in the Kanto region and had always been curious about Izumo Taisha but found it hard to visit due to the distance. While touring Kyushu by ferry, I spontaneously decided to detour to Shimane. Visiting Izumo Taisha was a meaningful experience — the harmony between its historic atmosphere and natural surroundings brought a sense of peace and clarity as I walked the grounds.

Motorcycle parking is available, making it a convenient stop for touring riders.

Inasa Beach is just 1.3 km from the shrine and can easily be reached on foot.

I stayed at the Izumo Royal Hotel, which offered covered parking for motorcycles — a rider-friendly accommodation I can highly recommend.
