This time, I took a motorcycle tour to Sado Island, a beautiful island floating in the Sea of Japan. Sado is full of natural scenery and historical spots, offering a journey of freedom that only a motorcycle can provide.
Day1 Crossing the Sea to Sado Island: The Adventure Begins with a Ferry Ride
The journey to Sado starts by boarding a ferry from Niigata Port. Loading my motorcycle onto the ferry instantly elevated the sense of adventure. The ferry ride took about 2.5 hours, and the view of the Sea of Japan from the deck was calm and stunning. As Sado Island appeared in the distance, the touring excitement truly kicked in!
Seagulls accompanied us, flying close enough that you could hear their wings and calls, making the ferry deck feel like a small natural stage. Watching them play in the fresh ocean breeze and clear blue skies added a special touch to the journey.
Savoring Sado’s Seafood at Sushiya Maruishi: A Conveyor Belt Sushi Delight
After arriving at Ryotsu Port, it was time for lunch. Just a short ride from the port is “Sushiya Maruishi,” where you can enjoy fresh seafood from Sado. This conveyor belt sushi restaurant is directly operated by Ishihara Suisan, a local fish market, offering fresh, high-quality sushi at affordable prices.

Exploring Sado’s Natural Beauty: Coastal Roads and Mountain Paths
After lunch, I set off towards the western Sotokaifu Coast. Riding along the coast, the emerald green sea stretched out to my left, while rugged mountains rose to my right. This is the essence of solo motorcycle touring – the freedom to ride through such stunning landscapes.。
Note: There are no stores along the way from the city center to Futatsugame, so it’s best to stock up on supplies beforehand.
Breathtaking Views at Futatsugame
In North Sado, I visited Futatsugame, one of the island’s most iconic scenic spots. Named for two large turtle-shaped rocks, Futatsugame offers incredible views and some of the clearest waters. The tranquil waves lapping the shore create a peaceful atmosphere, making it a must-see destination.
Futatsugame is listed as a two-star location in the Michelin Green Guide Japan, and it’s easy to see why – the powerful yet serene beauty of Sado’s natural landscape is awe-inspiring here.
The Best Budget-Friendly Campsite: Relaxing at Futatsugame Campground
I spent the first night at Futatsugame Campground, a no-reservation, budget-friendly campsite. Check-in is at the SADO Futatsugame View Hotel, and campers can also use the hotel’s large bath for an additional fee.
Set up your tent with the sea and a beautiful sunset in front of you, and unwind under the stars at night. It’s the perfect way for riders to relax. The facilities are well-maintained, making for a comfortable camping experience.

Day 2: A Journey Through Sado’s History: Exploring Sado Kinzan and Tourist Attractions
On the second day, I immerse myself in the rich history of Sado, enjoying its beautiful nature and culture.
Riding the Osado Skyline to Sado Kinzan Gold Mine
The next morning, I rode along the Osado Skyline, the island’s most famous winding road. The road, which climbs to over 900 meters, offers sweeping views of Sado Island, with the sea and mountains unfolding before you. It’s a thrilling ride with its curves and breathtaking vistas.
Sado also has numerous historical attractions. I visited Sado Kinzan, once Japan’s largest gold mine. Now a museum, you can explore tunnels that showcase the old mining scenes and the daily lives of workers from that era. Walking through the cool tunnels, I was struck by the grand scale of the mine.

Sado’s Hidden Gem: Site of Kitazawa Flotation Plant
Close to Sado Kinzan, the Site of Kitazawa Flotation Plant is a popular spot for fans of ruins. Once a massive facility for processing gold ore, it now has an overgrown, mysterious atmosphere. The contrast between the man-made structures and the encroaching nature creates a surreal, almost “Castle in the Sky” scene.
Lunch at Sushi Benkei: Another Conveyor Belt Sushi Experience
After sightseeing, I headed back towards the city to enjoy lunch at “Benkei,” another popular conveyor belt sushi restaurant. Here, too, you can enjoy fresh seafood from Sado at a reasonable price.

Historical Exploration in Shukunegi: A Traditional Village
After lunch, I ventured south to the historical village of Shukunegi. With houses from the Edo period still standing, this village transports you back in time. The narrow stone-paved streets and traditional homes create an atmosphere of quiet reflection, perfect for a leisurely stroll.
Free Camping at Matsugasaki History Park
For my second night, I camped at Matsugasaki History Park Campground. Surrounded by nature, this spacious and free campsite is ideal for relaxing after a long day of riding. The peaceful setting, away from the tourist crowds, allows for a tranquil camping experience with the Sea of Japan right in front of you.
The next morning, I woke up to a beautiful sunrise, as Matsugasaki History Park is known for its excellent sunrise views.

Day 3: A Morning Miracle: Enjoying the Sunrise and the Spectacular Rice Terraces Before Heading to Niigata Port
On the final day of the Sado tour, I will first relish the breathtaking views of the rice terraces at sunrise before heading to Ryotsu Port to take the ferry back to Niigata Port.
A Majestic Scene at Iwakubi Shoryu Rice Terrace
Before catching the ferry back, I made a stop at the Iwakubi Shoryu Rice Terraces. This breathtaking sight features terraced fields that resemble a dragon ascending to the sky, earning it the name “Shoryu Rice Terraces.” The neatly arranged paddies follow the mountain slope, offering a spectacular, otherworldly view.
Conclusion: Motorcycle Touring on Sado Island
Motorcycle touring on Sado Island was an extraordinary experience, blending nature with history. The freedom to explore scenic coastal roads, mountain paths, and historical landmarks made the trip truly special. With routes suitable for both beginners and seasoned riders, Sado Island should definitely be on your list for your next adventure.
See you on the next journey!
