Highlights
- The Oike Spring Group is a natural spring where water, filtered over many years through the volcanic bedrock of Mt. Kurodake, flows to the surface. This pristine water source is recognized as one of the “Top 100 Famous Waters of Japan” by the Ministry of the Environment and is also included in Oita’s “Top 15 Famous Springs.”
- Located along the scenic Yamanami Highway, it’s a popular stop for touring riders traveling between Aso and Yufuin.
- The forest surrounding the spring is blanketed in moss, creating a mystical atmosphere reminiscent of the Studio Ghibli film Princess Mononoke. It’s a highly photogenic spot ideal for a peaceful break.
Note: Due to damage from a typhoon in August 2024, access to the “Meisui no Taki” (Famous Waterfall) remains restricted as of July 2025.
Quick Impression
The crystal-clear, cool spring water flowing through the forest creates a refreshing and serene experience. The mossy landscape has a Yakushima-like ambiance, perfect for a short nature walk. While some trails were closed due to fallen trees and restricted areas—meaning I couldn’t reach the waterfall—I still felt deeply immersed in the natural beauty of the area.
